RIPTA Wins GrowSmart Award for Newport Transportation and Visitors Center Project

RIPTA recently participated in the 2018 Power of Place Summit hosted by GrowSmartRI. It was attended by public officials, community leaders, state agencies, businesses and people interested in smart planning for Rhode Island’s future. It was a great day to share ideas and talk about the vital role public transit plays in economic development, air quality mitigation, commuting convenience and much more.

We were thrilled to receive a GrowSmart award for our recent work using federal funds to repair and improve the exterior of the Newport Transportation and Visitors Center. To learn more about that project and the award, click here to watch a short video.

Federal Grant Will Boost Bus Tunnel Maintenance Project

A new $904,000 federal grant will allow RIPTA to move forward with design plans for both short and long-term repair and maintenance work on the historic East Side bus tunnel. The tunnel, which first opened to trolleys in 1914 and cuts beneath steep College Hill, is important to our system – with nearly 1,680 buses traveling through it weekly. The tunnel is structurally sound but needs interior work, including a new drainage system.

We recently had the opportunity to give U.S. Senator Jack Reed a partial tour of the tunnel and thank him for his commitment to finding federal funds for our state’s infrastructure priorities.
