One of the only fixed guideways in Rhode Island, the East Side Bus Tunnel is a critical asset in the RIPTA network as it enables buses to climb College Hill at a reasonable incline. Without it, RIPTA buses would have no choice but to go all the way around the hill. This multi-year project involves safety improvements, structural repairs, drainage work, and upgrades to the passenger amenities at both ends of the tunnel. A preliminary needs analysis has already been completed, and architectural and engineering work is currently underway.
