RIPTA TO HOLD COMMUNITY MEETINGS in Providence, Newport and Woonsocket TO DISCUSS bus stop design guide

May 25, 2016

The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) is working on a Rhode Island Bus Stop Design Guide that will create guidelines to ensure the proper placement and consistent consideration of passenger amenities for bus stops and shelters throughout the state.  Public input is an important part of this planning process, and RIPTA will hold three informal meetings across the state next month to garner feedback.

RIPTA invites transit riders, municipal leaders, local businesses and the public to come learn about concepts that could be implemented in cities and towns based on best practices throughout the U.S.  Design team members, RIPTA and Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) staff will be on hand to hear feedback on design, operations, and maintenance considerations for bus stops throughout the state.

Currently, RIPTA follows the standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials when considering the placement of a bus stop or shelter, and how the shelters are configured.  This new design guide will take the process even further and help establish best practices to be followed, with an eye toward aesthetics, safety, accessibility and passenger comfort.  RIPTA is working with RIDOT and local municipalities on this project to ensure that the proper placement of stops and shelters are considered when roadwork is completed. RIPTA is working with McMahon Transportation Engineers and Planners of Boston. The transit authority has nearly 3,800 bus stops across the state.

“Bus stops and shelters are usually an overlooked aspect of roadway design, but they are very important to our passengers and to a successful transit system,” said Amy Pettine, Executive Director of Planning.  “We’re going to be looking at a number of factors – from the size and configuration of shelters to the amenities they have, such as bike racks, lighting and seating.  These informal meetings are the opportunity for people to have input as we look to shape a cohesive approach that enhances transit ridership through guidelines for urban, suburban and rural bus stops.”
