RIPTA CELEBRATES 10th ANNUAL NATIONAL DUMP THE PUMP DAY ON THURSDAY, JUNE 18, 2015

June 15, 2015

With the continued fluctuation of gas prices, the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) announced today that it will join with other public transportation systems nationwide to participate in the 10th annual “National Dump the Pump Day” on Thursday, June 18, 2015.  The slogan of this year’s National Dump the Pump Day is “Dump the Pump. Ride Public Transit.”

Join us in demonstrating how you’re dumping the pump on Thursday, June 18, 2015 – whether it is riding the bus, carpooling, walking, biking or even telecommuting!  Upload a photo of yourself showing how you dumped the pump with the hashtag #DumpThePumpRI and you’ll be entered to win a RIPTA prize pack.

Sponsored by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), the 2015 National Dump the Pump Day is a day that encourages people to ride public transportation instead of using a car for their daily commutes or other trips.  Started in June 2006 when gas prices were $3 per gallon, this national day emphasizes that public transportation is a convenient travel option that also helps people save money.  According to a recent APTA Transit Savings Report, individuals in a two-person household can save an average of more than $9,394 annually by downsizing to one car.

Additionally, public transportation is a cornerstone of local economies in urban, suburban, and rural communities. In fact, a public transportation system helps to make a community economically prosperous and competitive.  Every $1 invested in public transportation generates approximately $4 in economic returns, powering community growth and revitalization, according APTA.

Commuter Resource RI, an outreach component of RIPTA, is a program designed to promote alternatives to your commute and save you money.  If you are interested in learning more about free resources available to help you dump the pump, email commuter@ripta.com or visit http://www.ripta.com/commuter-resource.
