RIPTA REQUESTS MUNICIPAL AND LOCAL PROPERTY OWNERS TO ASSIST WITH SNOW REMOVAL

January 26, 2015

Snow accumulation and ice build-up pose serious challenges for Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) operations and our transit customers. Many people rely on walking and transit as their primary way to get around, and without a wide, clear path through snow and ice, it is especially difficult for people with disabilities, seniors, and children to travel safely. RIPTA removes snow and clears ice at all of our transit facilities throughout Rhode Island including the Kennedy Plaza Passenger Terminal. However, with a small staff and large winter storm workload, RIPTA is unable to remove snow from the nearly 5,000 bus stops throughout the state. RIPTA heavily relies on adjacent property owners and businesses to clear bus stops and sidewalks.

RIPTA appreciates the cooperation of property owners and local municipalities in making these sidewalks and bus stops safe for our passengers. Please help RIPTA promote a safe pedestrian environment. We also ask municipalities to direct their Department of Public Works crews to remove snow from RIPTA bus shelters and bus stops whenever possible.
